When food has become the enemy

Food can become the enemy when stress eating takes over our lives and is when our natural appetite is out of sync with our desire to eat and can lead to over eating, in turn gaining weight and long term possible metabolic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes.

There you go, I’ve said it. So many ideas there in the one sentence but one that may not jump out unless you’ve been listening closely to the general conversation around type 2 diabetes and how it has been viewed over the years. The commonly held belief by medical authorities and those suffering with the condition is that it is a progressive disease for which the only hope of recovery is using drugs to limit glucose.

Having reduced my calorie intake over more than 10 years I found I could lose weight and did not put it back on again but when I discovered I had type 2 diabetes I needed to lose more weight than ever before and I had already lost over 20% of my body weight at this point from when I was my heaviest. So weight loss was only part of the solution unless I was to give in to the idea that drugs are the only option.

It was when I switched to low carb and more recently no or very low carb, healthy fat that I had to stop taking drugs that would otherwise deplete my body of glucose and put me on the sofa for the rest of my days.

Not only did this bring me out of diabetic markers it wholly solved the issue of stress eating. In my life up to this point I can honestly say that I did not have any real control over my appetite and could to a degree, eat when I was stressed.

So two things here, if your reading this thinking there is no hope for type 2 diabetes. There is. And if your suffering with being over weight and never being able to lose weight, perhaps having heard on the news that scientists say we are genetically ‘wired to be fat’ then there is hope for you too. We are not wired to be fat, genetically or otherwise. Its simply been the types of foods that we have consumed.

Switch to healthy fat and lower or even cut out carbohydrates, the latter if only for a limited time and to rapidly lose weight.

And above all , don’t give up or lose hope. We don’t need to have food become our enemy or make a monkey out of us.

All the best to you and your health.
